A method for deriving reservoir lithology andfluid content for a target location (400) from pre-stack seismic reflection data (110). The method usesinversion (200) of pre-stack seismic reflection datafor both the target location and a calibration location(110) having known subsurface lithology and fluidcontent to derive the subsurface lithology and fluidcontent at the target location (400). The inversionprocess (200) is preferably a viscoelastic inversionto account for the effects of friction on seismic wavepropagation. The results of the inversion process area set of subsurface elastic parameters for both thetarget and calibration locations. Relative magnitudesof these subsurface elastic parameters are compared(300), together with the known subsurface lithologyand fluid content at the calibration location (146), toderive the subsurface lithology and fluid content atthe target location (400).
