A zeolite catalyst for the liquid phase alkylation and transalkylation of benzene

A modified zeolite catalyst for the liquid phase alkylation and transalkylation of benzene comprising 30 to 70% by weight of beta-N zeolite having a silicon/aluminium ratio of between 20 and 40, from 0.5 to 10% by weight of halogen and gamma-Al2O3 making up the remainder is described. A method for the preparation of this catalyst comprising the addition of a compound containing halogen to a mixture of beta-H zeolite and a gamma-AL2O3 precursor, with roasting following forming, is also described.
