SWITCHING ELEMENT FOR DATA TRAFFIC IN ATM TECHNOLOGY FOR BROADBAND SERVICES

Switching element for data traffic in ATM technology for broadband services, in which the data are organized in adjacent cells of fixed length, each consisting of a data field and a label, carrying information for routing through the connection network and service information. The element can be used both for applications of the "cross-connect" type and as a general-purpose switch; it is programmable and is provided with a diagnostic system and mechanisms for traffic decongestion. It has four different cell routing modes, and can reject low-priority cells and take into account congestion signals arriving from the down-line stage. (Fig. 1). IMAGE
