This thesis describes the modeling, the performance analysis and the design of aswitching element for broadband communications, which are attracting wide public interest in recent discussions about information superhighways. These are the future, highspeed, multi-service networks that are anticipated to bring together the telephone, data communication and television distribution networks into one, common infrastructure. This interest is focused on the services that will be provided by way of these networks, while the central issue of this thesis is the design and analysis of the network that is to be their bearer.
