Method for deactivating the braking device of self- braking electric motors, the motors being of the type comprising elastic means 8, 33 acting on at least one braking element 9, 10, 30, 31, associated with the motor shaft 6, the braking element, by action of the elastic means, being able to prevent the rotation of the shaft in absence of motor excitation; and at least one magnetic element 14, able when the motor is excited to oppose the action of the elastic means on the braking element so that the motor shaft can turn freely. The method calls for utilising, to oppose the action of the elastic means on the braking element, a portion of the magnetic flux generated by the motor when it is excited. The braking device for implementation of the method provides for a magnetic element having a plurality of elongated elements 14 at least partly 14A connected to the stator pack 4 of the motor, and able to divert a portion of the magnetic flux generated in the motor, when it is excited, to the braking element, and thus eliminating the braking action.
