This invention relates to a process and plant for the treatment of wastes containing organic material by pyrolysis, especially for the treatment of solid urban wastes. The process comprises: a stage of loading the wastes which have to be subjected to treatment on transport trucks, a stage of placing the trucks containing waste in a treatment tunnel in which a pyrolysis chamber is provided, a stage of indirect heating of the waste within the pyrolysis chamber up to a temperature such as to bring about pyrolysis of the wastes with extraction of the gas generated by the pyrolysis process from the pyrolysis chamber and a stage of removal of the trucks from the tunnel in order to discharge the solid wastes remaining in the trucks.
