The present invention pertains to reduced-calorie chewing gum compositions comprising a gum basehaving an enhanced hydrophilic nature. In oneembodiment, the invention pertains to a reduced-caloriesaliva stimulating chewing gum composition whichcomprises (A) a gum base having an enhanced hydrophilicnature present in an amount from about 40% to about 75%,by weight of the chewing gum composition, (B) a bulkingagent present in an amount up to about 60%, by weight ofthe chewing gum composition, (C) an effective amount of asweetening agent, and (D) a homogeneous mixture of ahydrophilic polymer present in an amount of at leastabout 1.5% in an anhydrous carrier. In anotherembodiment, the invention pertains to a center-filledchewing gum composition having an outer shell enclosing acavity and a liquid center within the cavity, wherein theouter shell comprises a gum base having an enhancedhydrophillc nature. In yet another embodiment, theinvention pertains to a confectionery coated chewing gumcomposition having a center portion and a confectionerycoating over the center portion wherein the centerportion comprises a reduced-calorie gum base having anenhanced hydrophilic nature. In other embodiments, theinvention pertains to a reduced-calorie saliva-stimulating center-filled chewing gum and a reduced-calorie saliva-stimulating confectionery coated chewinggum.
