An RF surface coil (110) is formed of a single conductor wound in a solenoidal configuration. The conductor turns (114, 116) have inter-turn spacing (d). To increase SNR a number of capacitive splits (125) are formed in each turn of the coil. The RF surface coil (110) minimizes capacitive coupling to a patient's body and reduces resistive coupling of the coil to the body of the patient in NMR imaging.
