The arrangement processes mail. It has a control module (5) and input/output control means (6,61,62) and input and output means (2,8,4). It also has a printer module (7) and a storage mechanism (3,9) connected to the control module (5), with predetermined storage areas. The arrangement also has a receiving arrangement (2) in communicative connection with the control module (5). This receives corresponding data transmitted from an external memory. The control module (5) and the receiving arrangement (2) are programmed to pick up items (31), to download data from the external memory (10) which concern at least one data table. The table contains information which are combined to a stipulation. The stipulations are input via an input device (8) to automatically form demand data. The control module (5) stores the data in predetermined areas of the memory when the arrangement is set in operation. The control module (5) is programmed to process inputs according to service demands to automatically select respective carriage from a given group which satisfy the service requirements. The control module (5) then calculates the carriage or dispatch rate on the basis of the weight of the parcel or letter and on the basis of the current tariff for the service in question. The control module (5) is also programmed to compare the rate for cost optimisation with close automatic selection of an adequate carriage form.
