In the process as per the invention, one alternative per step is selected from a plurality of alternatives for the individual steps and a problem-solving unit is constructed from these alternative steps. This problem-solving unit is then executed and the result is compared with the problem. Different alternatives for individual steps enable different units to be constructed, yielding different results. The results are evaluated and this evaluation is used to assign weightings to the individual steps. Selections can be made from the step alternatives and the selected step alternatives multiply copied so as then to construct units again from the step alternatives thus produced. This results in an evolutive adaptation of the units to the problem to be solved, by which the solution to the problem can be found.
