Shell catalysts (I) for non-steady-state heterogeneous catalytic processes comprises: (A) a support; (B) an interlayer; and opt. (C) at least one active layer. The interlayer (B) consists of a nitride, oxide, carbide or chloride of a metal or non-metal or a mixt. these, with a dense, non-porous microstructure and a non-polar surface with a very low density of acidity centres. Also claimed is a non-steady-state heterogeneous catalytic process carried out at 50-600 degrees C and 0.1-100 bar in presence of (I).
