According to the present invention, a method is provided for the detection and cellular localization of DNA or RNA sequences. In one embodiment, the method comprises the steps of labeling a DNA probe with a hapten, for example biotin, immunochemically detecting the hybridized DNA probe using, for example, a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled antibody, depositing labeled tyramine, e.g. by enzymatic action of HRP, thereby creating an additional biotin source, and detecting the additional biotin source with avidin biotin complex (ABC), enzyme, or flouorochrome avidin. In a further embodiment, a method is provided for detecting human papilloma virus by in situ hybridization signal amplification based on labeled tyramine deposition.
