Method for planning and operating a railway system based on a formal description of the track network

The method involves design and administration of the installation, and planning of control and safety systems, aided by a data processor with support from a stored formal representation of the track topology by double-vertex graphs. In the track diagram, edges (k1-k3) join the vertices (p0-p3,q0-q5) of individual graphs, only a dead-end (1) being represented with no edge. Simple track sections (2) are represented by single edges, sets of points (3,4) by double edges, and a complex scissors crossing (5) as depicted, no more than two edges meeting at any vertex.
