Faraday rotators include magnetic optical elements and magnetic field generating units. The magneto-optical element has an optical path extending through the optical element. The magnetic field generating unit is disposed so as not to block the optical path to generate a uniform magnetic field in the magneto-optical device. The magnetic field generating unit may include first and second magnet units. The first magnet unit is disposed so as not to block the optical path to generate a magnetic field passing through the magneto-optical element. The second magnet unit is disposed so as not to block the optical path to generate a magnetic field passing through the magneto-optical element. The magnetic field generated by the second magnet unit is perpendicular to the magnetic field generated by the first magnet unit and combines with the magnetic field generated by the first magnet unit to produce a uniform magnetic field in the magneto-optic crystal.
