The inlet and outlet valve arrangement (9) of a valve controlled displacement motor or piston motor (2, 5, 8, 9) which is drivable by a fluidic or hydraulic pressure medium is fluidically or hydraulically actuated by exploiting the pressure pulsations in the working chamber (4) of a displacement pump or piston pump (2, 4, 6, 7) coupled to the motor (2, 5, 8, 9) and which therefore runs in synchronism with the motor (2, 5, 8, 9). The pump is particularly for pumping brine in a reverse osmosis plant (25) used for desalination. Pressure pulsations in the pump working chamber (4) control, via a line (24), reversal of the valve arrangement (9) which directs spent brine from the plant to the working chamber (5) of the motor during the working stroke of the pump. In this way some of the pressure energy in the spent brine assists reciprocation of the pumping piston (2). IMAGE
