The appts. promotes chemical decomposition and/or destruction of waste, esp. exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, or other fossil fuel-driven machinery. The gases pass through a reactor with a dielectrically-impeded discharge path. The electrode structure comprises a dielectric-coated electrode with second, opposing electrode, between which, at discharge gaps of set spacing, a high potential is applied at set frequency, to excite the discharge. The reactor volume is divided into alternating zones, with- and without discharge. The reactor (10) establishes repeated excess field at the discharge zones, along the direction of gas flow.
