This new method decomposes and/or destroys harmful substances, esp. in internal combustion engine exhaust gases, or gases from other machinery driven by fossil fuels, using a plasma discharge. The pollutants are passed through a reactor having dielectrically-impeded discharges. The discharges occur in a novel periodic structure, having alternating discharge- and discharge free zones. In the discharge zones, there are local field excesses, raising the effective electron energy. Also claimed is appts. to carry out the plasma treatment, substantially as described, in which opposite electrodes induce localised, periodic field excess.
