The inlet manifold pressure is detected using a pressure sensor (3) arranged behind the throttle valve of the combustion engine (1). The pressure is converted into a load signal after a correction. The correction takes into account the height as well as the internal and, if required, external exhaust gas return. The pressure is preferably corrected according to a sum of the ambient pressure and exhaust gas pressure weighted with a height factor. The pressure may be reduced to a pressure component depending on the exhaust gas pressure, the engine rotation rate and the duty cycle of an exhaust gas return valve (2).
