A gas generator for use with motor vehicle passive personnel retaining devices i.e. airbags. The device comprises a fuel (10) containing chamber (1), made up of at least two parts (5,6) which are joined together by a weld (7). Also contained within the chamber (1) is a weld protector (14), which comprises a detachable strip (14) and an elastic lip (15).
