A heating and then cooling process for materials, esp. ceramic products, transported through the heating, firing and cooling zones of a heat treatment unit, involves conveying the material alternately in opposite directions along parallel narrowly spaced conveyor lines such that surface regions of the material located on a conveyor line (1 or 8) in the cooling zone (4 or 14) are separated only by a gas interspace from corresponding surface regions of the material located on an adjacent conveyor line (8 or 1) in the heating zone (12 or 2). Also claimed is a ceramic product firing kiln for carrying out the above method.
