The material is broken up and reduced to particle sizes of below 15 mm. The particles are dried and passed through sieves to obtain fractions with tight particle size distribution. The fractions which are obtained by sifting are freed magnetically from free iron and are fed to a transport belt which runs over a roller which is in the form of a permanent magnet. The non-magnetic parts which have a low iron oxide content drop adjacent to the roller and are collected separately from the magnetic iron oxide containing parts which drop under the roller.
