Catalysts for selective epoxidation of alkenes are of formula MxOy(L)z (I), where x = 1, 2 or 3; y = 1 to 2x+1, such that x+z = a metal oxidn. no. of +5 (V) or +6 (Mo, Ru); z = 2 to 2x; M = Mo, Ru or V; and L = an N, O or S donor ligand. Also claimed are heterogeneous catalysts for selective oxidn. of olefins in the presence of O2, which contain an (in)organic support and (I); and the use of (I) in the selective epoxidation of alkenes of formula R1R3C=CR2R4 (II) with atmos. O2. In formula (II), R1-4 = H, 1-20C alkyl, 1-12C alkoxy or 6-10C aryl; or R1 + R2 = a 5-30 C ring.
