A process is disclosed for operating an engine-independent vehicle heating with a fuel-generated, in particular liquid fuel-generated, heating flame whose existence is sensed by a detector. When the vehicle heating is switched off because of a defective fuel stop valve, no more flame-generating fuel should be supplied. For that purpose, the fuel supply means are automatically stopped when the flame detector senses a flame after a predetermined period of time has elapsed since the fuel stop valve was intentionally actuated to stop fuel supply.
