A device (18) for measuring the distance between the ground and, for example, the cutting head (10) of a harvester combine, in order to adjust the height of the cut, uses an intermediate signal transmission arm (22) between a 5 cm wide sprung-steel slide (20) and an ultrasound or laser sensor (24) on the cutter back. The slide moves over the surface in the same direction as the harvester and directs the arm over a parallelogram track (32). This holds a plate (36) from which signals are reflected to the sensor, which electronically controls the blade height. The use of the intermediate arm prevents vibration on the slide from transmitting false signals to the sensor. It also prevents falsification of signals by weeds, etc. in the signal path. Thus more accurate height regulation may be maintained.
