The halter either is made of electrically conductive material or has a length of spring wire built into it in the shape of an antenna. When this makes contact with the wire of a low-voltage boundary fence, the animal receives an uncomfortable shock from current conducted through it to the ground. A conductive fibre may be used instead of wire. The antenna may also be fitted to a conventional halter, and the current conducted by a cable to a metallic part of it or to another sensitive part of the animal.
