Preparation of adsorbent materials, used for the simultaneous adsorption of toxic (in)organic substances from industrial effluent, comprises impregnating the coarse pores of a cold-setting double silicate matrix with a mixture of very finely ground active carbon and natural or synthetic zeolites. Preferably the active carbon is soot and the double silicates are cements. The ratio of carbon and zeolite to silicates is 0.05-0.9:1. All three components are mixed together with water to form a mixture that can be granulated. Used material is dried and then heated to a temperature up to 1000 deg C in a closed system in the presence of a noble metal catalyst so that the organic components are completely oxidised and the heavy metal ions become glazed into insoluble silicates.
