Sealing working surface during formation of hollow space in tunnel and pipeline construction

Fluid is fed to the earth pressure chamber and the working surface (7) is wetted with the fluid and/or the earth-fluid mixt. The working surface is attacked with high pressure water jets, possibly with the addition of additives, is wetted and penetrated. Fine particles are loosened, broken down and applied to the working surface in a sealing soil-water suspension. Flow passages in the form of gaps and similar are sealed against water loss. The high pressure nozzle jets (9) are directed axis-parallel to the advance shield (1), partic. horizontally, on to the working surface. In addition to emitting fresh water, the jets are directed into the pressure chamber between the working surface and the advance shield.
