The device has one or more idle or reversing rollers (4,5,6) inside a stabilising zone of traction-free paper guide. At least one of the rollers (4) has a soft, springy, surface coating radial to the roller axis. The rollers (4,5,6) are preferably formed as laminated rollers. The soft, sprung surface coating is preferably a foam laminate roller coating (12). The paper track (8) may be driven by a friction drive.
