PURPOSE:To detect accurately a negative frame which need not be printed by dividing an image plane of each negative frame into numbers of small areas and taking measurements of density, and comparing a value with specific order from a maximum or minimum value of the density of part or the whole of the image screen with a specific value. CONSTITUTION:The means density value of each color element in a negative frame is measured at plural positions and those mean density values are compared with the specific value to detect a negative which need not be printed. For example, the image plane 46 of the negative frame is divided longitudinally and laterally into plural areas and when the minimum value DMmin of the mean value DMij[=(DRij+DGij+DBij)/3] of respective density values DRij, DGij, and DBij of red, green, and blue at the longitudinally (i)th and laterally (i)th point is much larger, it is decided that this frame need not be printed.
