Actual temp. of the exhaust gas is measured and compared with a desired value corresp. to correct operation of the ignition system in all cylinders. The absolute value of any discrepancy is assessed as well as its rate of change. Audible and visual warnings are given when e.g. excessive temp. is detected, and a faulty cylinder may be taken out of service to reduce the exhaust temp. to a safe level. ADVANTAGE - Any malfunction of ignition can be detected and remedied easily and reliably without risk to catalytic convertor.
