The process uses a cylindrical furnace body (1') having a burner (3) central at one end with inlets for fuel (14) and oxygen and air (13). Gases under treatment pass from an external annular flame. This is into a primary combustion zone (4) at the burner flame. this is surrounded by a secondary (5) and an outermost tertiary zone (7). The tertiary zone pref. has an annular external duct (6) supplying oxygen and air. The air ratio is below 0.5 at the burner flame, 0.8 to 1.2 in the secondary zone, and above 1.2 in the tertiary zone. The furnace temp. is pref. 1000 to 1200 deg. C.. The exhaust gases can heat cold gas or make steam.
