A composition for the topical treatment of infections caused by viruses, bacteria and milden

Peptides corresponding to regions of proteins encoded by the HTLV-1 genome are provided. These peptides are immunologically reactive with HTLV-1 specific antibodies. Several of the peptides are capable of distinguishing between HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infection. The peptides are useful in assays for detection of HTLV-1 infection or exposure and in compositions to elicit the production of antibodies against HTLV-1 in animals and man. Antibodies elicited in response to the antibodies are also provided.
