PURPOSE: To italicize a font by slanting a symbol stored in a generic font format as an arrangement of pixel locations by offsetting the arrangement of pixel locations at a predetermined slope to crease a staircase edge. CONSTITUTION: An inclination to be introduced and the vertical position of individual symbol are corrected by adjusting an output memory pointer in an output page memory. The output memory painter P notifies the address of first byte in a boundary box to a process. A word is created by entering a current byte obtained from a font memory into the low end register AL a 2 byte register adjacent to a preceding font byte in a high end register AH. In order to arrange the symbols in a page image memory, the word is shifted to create the vertical position of font. Concealed pixels 'a' 'b', 'c' are inserted automatically into appropriate specified locations of the symbol and an operation for inclining the symbol is executed simultaneously.
