PURPOSE:To output a read image which has density gradations by applying a specific bipolar pulse voltage or rectangular wave voltage and inputting information which has density gradations optically over continuous irradiation with write light and read light. CONSTITUTION:A driving waveform obtained by adding a DC bias voltage 2 of 0.1-10V to the bipolar pulse voltage or rectangular voltage waveform is used. Consequently, self-polarization that ferroelectric crystal has and the DC voltage are coupled strongly to eliminate bistability, thereby generating a monostable state. Specially, the applied voltage polarity of the pulse voltage or rectangular wave voltage 1 in writing is so selected as to have the opposite polarity from the DC bias voltage 2 and the voltage level is set properly to inverts a director for liquid crystal molecules along a cone at the time of the optical writing, thereby continuously controlling the inversion angle according to the intensity of the write light.
