An inducible promoter is used to regulate expression ofa gene which is known to be critical in microsporogenesis,i.e., the production of pollen. The selected gene's controlsequences are modified so that it is normally "off" and as aresult the plants are male sterile. When it is desired toreproduce the male sterile plants, male fertility isrestored by treating the plants with a non-phytotoxicchemical which induces expression of the critical gene.
