Purification process of the activated sludge type comprising the stages consisting in subjecting the effluents to a pretreatment, passing the effluents through an aeration tank (6) and detaining the effluents in a settling tank (8). The process is characterised in that it comprises the additional stages consisting in: - continually measuring a first parameter representing the degree of oxidation of the effluent present in the aeration tank (6); - subjecting the operation of the said aerator (7) to servo control by two set values (CB,CH) of the said first parameter representing the oxidation level; - continually measuring a second parameter representing the quality of the treated effluent; - subjecting the determination of the said set values (CB,CH) of the said first parameter to servo control by two set values (C'B,C'H) of the said second parameter.
