The wheel (54) rests on a rail (50). A frame (1) mounted on the support and lifting means (6, 6 ′) carries slideways disposed on either side of the rail (50) and parallel to the rail (50). Two carriages are mounted to move in translation on slideways. On the carriages are mounted movable in translation in a direction perpendicular to the slides, the grinding devices (12), a control device by ultrasound (13 ′) and two position sensors. The measurement is made of the ultrasound propagation time in the rim (54a) along two perpendicular directions, and the measurement of the width of the rim (54a). It calculates and it compares the propagation speeds of the ultrasound, so as to determine the stress state of the rim (54a).
