The cleaning process is carried out in steps, first the main openings of the shaft are stopped up, after which the inside of the shaft is sprayed with a cleaning and/or degreasing agent, using a tube (41) with spray openings (40) in its end. The cleaning agent is allowed to react for a short time with the contamination in the shaft, after which the inside of the shaft is sprayed with a rotating spray of hot steam. The material which is removed from the shaft is caught and fed to a degreasing tank. As a final operation the inside of the shaft is sprayed with disinfectant. This operation can be combined with the steam cleaning.
