Laboratory study of assisted oil recovery from a cylindrical rock sample (1) involves hot metallising the outer sample surface to provide fluid impermeability, mounting the smaple in a test chamber (2) such that the outer sample surface is sepd. from the chamber walls by an annular space, injecting a predetermined amt. of oil under pressure into one of the smaple ends, interrupting oil supply, injecting gas under pressure into one of the sample ends and recovering the oil and gas at the other sample end, a counter-pressure being maintained in the annular space throughout the test to avoid bursting of the sample. The injected gas is compressed air and the metal-coated sample is sheathed with a fluid-impermeable heat shrinkable material. Also claimed is appts. for carrying out the process, the appts. including a device (18,19) for injecting liq. under pressure into the annular space and a device (20,21) for discharging the liq. from the test chamber (2).
