Cosmetic and pharmaceutical compsn. for topical or oral admin. comprises a protecting agent with anti-radical and UV filtering properties comprising in a carrier: (i) at least one monomer and/or oligomer of a catechin-type phenol of plant origin; and (ii) at least one hydroxycinnamic acid of plant origin. The extract is prepd. by extracting with warm water, precipitating tannins from the aq. phase by addn. of an inorganic salt pref. sodium chloride and filtering, treating the filtrate with EtOAc, concentrating the organic phase under reduced pressure, adding distilled water, eliminating EtOAc by evapn. under reduced pressure and at not more than 50 deg C, washing the aq. phase with chlorinated polar solvent, eliminating the solvent pref. under reduced pressure evaporation at not more than 50 deg C and drying.
