The gripping mechanism comprises a handle (10) situated on one side of the door, and a counter-handle (14) on the other side. Both handle and counter-handle are joined together by a fixing mechanism formed by two jaws (24,42). The jaws have smaller dimensions than the handle and the counter-handle, by which the jaws are carried. A tightening mechanism (38) clamps one jaw against the other with the door between them. The tightening mechanism is situated on the periphery of the door. Some fittings (16) are interposed between each jaw and the door. The jaws have cavities (26,44) for receiving cams (52,54) situated on the fittings.
