Housing area for valve seats in IC engine cylinder head - has thin section metal insert fitted into landing area, between adjacent valve seat housings, with insert embedded into cylinder head during casting process
The cylinder head (10) is constructed with a combustion face (20), which forms the boundary of the combustion chamber (19) of the engine. This combustion surface has, at least, two holes (16 & 18)), which open into the combustion chamber and which are separated by a landing area (22). The openings are formed as housings for the cylindrical housings, which are located to receive the valve seats. At least one, but more often two, metal inserts are embedded into the cylinder head, during the casting process, into the area of the landing between adjacent housings for valve seats. The insert is formed from thin section metal and is in the form of a plate, which is folded to present its folded corner in a direction (X-X), which is parallel to the line joining the two axes of the openings.
