The real-time floating point transformation of serial signals from a computer provides conversion between binary and ternary formats. A block of ternary signals is converted to binary form in a double operation commencing with decomposition of the ternary block into two blocks of binary serial data, followed by sequential transfer in a pre-determined order. The transfer is at a higher data rate than the binary data emerging from the decomposition. The higher data rates compensates for the increased number of codes. The same operations are performed in reverse to produce a ternary signal from the equivalent binary signal. The increased speed allows addition of system data to the data stream to pass control information.
