The alloy according to the invention has the formula: ## STR1 ## wherein M represents one or more metals which may be substituted for iron and are chosen from the group consisting of chromium, manganese, vanadium, tungsten, antimony, lead and platinum; x is between -30 and +50; y is between -10 and +35; z is from -25 to +70; t and u being chosen so that x + y + z + t + u = 0. This alloy, especially when it has a nanocrystalline structure, is advantageously usable for the manufacture of cathodes for the electrochemical synthesis of sodium chlorate . The cathodes thus manufactured have a hydrogen overvoltage much lower than that of the steel cathodes currently used.
