Personal body armour e.g. for security forces

The body armour consists of: (a) an outer supple plate (1) of closed-cell foam rubber some 5 mm thick; (b) at least one inner rigid plate (2a, 2b) of polyamide some 2 mm thick; and (c) at least one supple pad (3, 3b) of closed-cell PVC foam some 10-15 mm thick on the inside of the rigid plates on the opposite side to the supple plates. The rigid plates are hinged by sewing them to supple rubber strips (4) located between the inner and outer plates. The body armour can be in the form of a chest shield made up of a number of plates radiating from a central point aligned with the wearer's sternum, or it can be in the form of a waistcoat with protection for the chest-abdomen and upper and lower sections of the back, with fastenings in the form of self-adhesive strips.
