A portion of compressed air 62 is directed from a first fluid flow path 64 to a second flow path 112 including a heat exchanger 20 positioned within the second flow path. The cooled air is then returned to a gallery 84 within housing 46 to be accelerated by the top part 82 of a two storey compressor blade to drive a flow 100 of cooled cooling air to the components of the gas turbine engine. The components of engine are therefore cooled with a smaller quantity of air drawn from the compressor than if compressor air was used directly.
