PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively treat water severely contaminated by bacteria by fitting a suction pipe and a discharge pipe to a sterilization vessel of a spiral flowing water type ultraviolet sterilization device so that their directions are made different from each other. ;SOLUTION: A spiral flowing water type ultraviolet sterilization device 1 consists of a cylindrical sterilization vessel 2 and an ultraviolet bactericidal lamp 3 coaxially installed therein. A suction pipe 4 and a discharge pipe 5 are fitted to one end part and the other end part of the sterilization vessel 2 respectively. A center line P of the suction pipe 4 is made a tangent line of a virtual circle Q centering a certain point on an axis X-X of the sterilization vessel 2, and the projector of the center line P to the section is made to cross the axis X-X at an obtuse angle. The position relation of a center line R of the discharge pipe 5 to a virtual circle S and the position relation thereof to the axis X-X axis are made like those of the center line P. When flowing water is caused to flow into the suction pipe 4, the water flows in a spiral.
