PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an SiC fiber reinforced Ti matrix composite having high specific strength and high specific rigidity in medium and high temp. regions at a relatively low cost by using SiC fibers of specific diameter, having a C layer of specific thickness on the surface, as a reinforcement and also using Ti or Ti alloy as a matrix. ;SOLUTION: An Si-containing polymer, such as polycarbosilane and polytitanocarbosilane, is melted and spun, infusibilized by means of electron beam irradiation, etc., and burned at about 1000°C in the air or at about 1200°C in He and then a C layer is formed by a CVD method, etc., by which SiC fiber of 10-50μm diameter, having a C layer of 0.2-2.5μm thick on the surface, is prepared. By using this fiber as a reinforcement and also using Ti or Ti alloy, such as Ti-4.5Al-3V-2Mo-2Fe, as a matrix, the SiC fiber reinforced Ti matrix composite, excellent in chemical compatibility of interface, can be obtained.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
