PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify structure easily and excavate even a tunnel having a rectangular cross section, to eliminate the need for big driving force and to hold even facing collapse earth pressure sufficiently by a cutter head. ;SOLUTION: A rectangular-plate shaped cutter head 2 with an excavating surface smaller than a rectangular sectional shield body 1 is arranged onto the front section of the shield body 1, and a cutter driving device 4 constituting a parallel link manipulator of eight cutter driving cylinders 3A-3H, in which front end sections are connected rotatably to the cutter head 2 while rear end sections are coupled rotatably to the shield body 1, is installed. The excavator is configured so as to excavate a bedrock by reciprocating the cutter head 2 in a space containing an orthogonal surface to a shield axial center by the cutter driving device 4.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
