PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a small, inexpensive stabilizer to be used and allow instantaneously to restart against instantaneous power failure. SOLUTION: A high pressure sodium lamp 1 is provided with plural arc tubes 5a and 5b respectively where at least xenon gas and sodium are sealed, a first starter 6 in which a first high voltage is applied to the arc tubes 5a and 5b during startup, but is maintained in operation interruption state while the lamp is on and is restored after a time delay after the lamp is off, and a second starter 8 in which a second high voltage lower than the first high voltage is applied to the arc tubes 5a and 5d during restart and the waiting arc tubes are started up. Since a stabilizer 2 is a high pressure sodium lamp 1 provided with starters 6 and 8, a small, inexpensive stabilizer for high pressure mercury lamp can be used.
